landscapes

Colours can evoke vivid memories of places that used to be ours. In this ongoing series of paintings I explore the colours and sentiments of my youth.

back to home

The air is always thick

with humidity and the certain promise of

oncoming chaos.

Rebuilding on rubble is routine.

For now the sea beckons and the arak flows.

Bright blues mask missing mud

what else did we take that wasn’t ours?

The history cuts so deep

and the salt stings.

Hair frizzy skin slightly cold

sidewalks still glistening with rain.

Fog is a permanent state of mind around these parts.

Move slow and with intention, we’re all friends here.

The smell of garlic

and garbage burning.

In the summers thunder lights up

endless horizons buzzing with mosquitos.

Snow can be shovelled with brooms

hope gathered time and time again.

We are so insignificant

mountains tumbling into prairies rolling into

cities that feel accidental.

If you want to get lost, this is the place.

When the skies turn orange it’s

the desert vs. man.

have you tried?

what’s left

Do you ever wonder what will be left if we let climate change go it’s rapid little way?
We won’t be left. But nature will be. It might even thrive without us.
These vibrant plants all survived us. They’re delicate - they get to be, without us.

Illustrated field guide to Amsterdam Noord

The Illustrated Field Guide to Amsterdam Noord is a travel guide, notebook and address book all in one. It guides you through the northern part of Amsterdam using illustrations and stories, and provides plenty of room to add your own observations, favourite hang outs, and secret hidding places.
With the field guide you can discover everything the other side of the IJ has to offer- use it to wander around, meet the locals, and write down thoughts.

The field guide was created to urge new residents and visitors to explore the northern side of the city and see and document its unique character before the inevitable process of gentrification changes the latter. It started as a passion project and was brought to life through a succesful crowdfunding campaign and with the invaluable support of local residents and the wonderful folk at ilovenoord.com. With the field guide, I hoped to instil a sense of pride and belonging in the new residents of Noord.
